Hanging the Mirror:
The Discipline of Reflective Leadership

MA Logo

Course purpose

Every organization, no matter how small or large, has a culture in which its employees operate. This culture, more than anything else, impacts the level of employee loyalty and engagement. And more than any other factor, leadership creates the culture.

Effective organizational leaders consciously make the design, development, and maintenance of their organization's culture a core responsibility of their job. They understand that perhaps the most important and legitimate use of their power and influence is to build a culture that unifies the organization and taps the collective excellence of its people.

The workshop prompts leaders to reflect on the kind of culture they are creating day in and day out by their own actions whether they realize it or not.

Target audience

  • Executives, Presidents, CEOs
  • Managers and supervisors
  • Organizational leaders

Participant outcomes

Participants will leave with an expanded awareness of the role they play and the choices they must make to consciously create the organizational culture that will best achieve the outcomes they seek.

They will be able to:
  • Take proactive steps to build a shared sense of the preferred future within the organization.
  • Use their authority to define and establish a culture that will lead toward the preferred future.
  • Create a unified, coherent leadership approach supportive of the culture.
  • Renew a sense of excitement and understanding throughout the organization around vision and customer service.
  • Establish an environment that stimulates the enthusiastic efforts of all employees.

Organizational benefits

Your organization will benefit from having:
  • A genuine sense of shared vision, of all working to serve the same customer.
  • Coherence between what the organization says and what it does.
  • Management practices that lead to outstanding front line customer service.
  • A unified, consistent leadership approach supportive of the culture.
  • A greater sense of trust throughout the organization.
  • A real sense of how each individual's job impacts the overall mission of the organization.
  • Enhanced cooperation across all functions.

Presentation options

This workshop can be presented in a 1, 1 1/2, or 2-day format. The one-day version is a dynamic, intensive presentation. The multi-day format allows more time for participation in exercises and discussion groups designed to reinforce new skills and apply newly learned material to circumstances currently present in your organization.
Book associated with seminar
A copy of our book Hanging the Mirror: The Discipline of Reflective Leadership will be available for each participant. The book provides not only a resource for review and a framework for continued effort, but can also be used to broaden understanding of these concepts throughout the organization.
